Mohawk College journalism students tackle youth mental health

Mohawk College's journalism students are putting out a special edition of their Ignite news magazine dealing with aspects of youth mental health.

Special issue coincides with CBC Hamilton town hall

Mohawk College's journalism students are putting out a special edition of their Ignite news magazine dealing with aspects of youth mental health.

The student journalists will releasethe special edition on Thursday. Their first stories on the issue are available atignitenews.caand include:

  • A former Hamilton youth ponders the impact of his father's depression on his own mental health issues.
  • The impact of bullying on youth mental health.
  • Theprevalence of suicide in Hamilton.
  • Internet addiction and the notion of it being a recognized mental illness.

There will be a .PDF version of Ignite at issuu.com/ignitenewsmagazine on Thursday.

Mohawk's journalism students are also assisting with CBC Hamilton's town hall session Wednesday evening regarding youth mental health.

Mental Health 101: Youth and the Hidden Crisis in Our Community runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at Mohawk College. The event is free and everyone is welcome.
