Halton police charge three with arson over two Burlington, Ont. fires

Three Ontario residents face charges over what Halton Regional Police Service called "a pair of suspicious fires" in Burlington, Ont., late last year.

On Dec. 2, police said they responded to a fire that caused minor damage to a Lodi Road residence near Dundas Street and Walkers Line.

Two days later, police were back at the same residence as another fire destroyed three unoccupied homes and damaged others. They said the fires caused about $1.7 million in damage.

In a Friday news release, police said they charged a 34-year-old Ajax resident, and a 40-year-old Courtice resident with arson and damage to property, in connection with the first fire.

They charged a 38-year-old Clarington resident, and the same 40-year-old with arson and disregarding human life in connection with the second fire.

Police and fire fighters were called to respond to a fire at a new housing development on Lodi Road in Burlington.

At the time, Burlington Fire Chief Dan Vanderlelie told CBC Hamilton at least 25 firefighters worked to evacuate families on the street and put the fires out.

Halton police already considered the fires "suspicious," and said they and the Office of the Fire Marshal were investigating.

The trio charged in connection with the fires were being held by police pending a bail hearing.
