Liberal LloydLongfieldre-elected in Guelph

Liberal incumbent LloydLongfieldhas wonre-election in Guelph with about40per cent of the popular vote.

When he returns to Ottawa, Longfieldhopes to see a less divided parliament.

He wants to see "less of the partisan attacks on each other," he said, with a strongerfocus on coming together to solve common problems for the constituents who have elected them.

"I think at the end of the day, the Canadian voters are right in whatever selection they make. It's up to us to to respond," he said.

"This is a message to all of the parties that we have to find ways to work together instead of attacking each other."

In the end, the Green Party's Steve Dyckcaptured25per cent of the popular vote, withConservative Ashish Sachan landing at 19per cent.

Aisha Jahangir of the NDP held 12per cent of the popular vote with People's Party candidate Mark Paralovos getting 1.5 per cent, Gordon Truscott of the Christian Heritage Party getting 0.7 per cent, Communist Juanita Burnett getting 0.2 per cent, Independent Michael Wassilynwith 0.2 per cent, and IndependentKornelis Kleveringreceiving 0.1 per cent of the ballots cast.

Voting Delays

Three polling stations near the University of Guelph were"overwhelmed" by student voters late in the day causing delays,RjeanGrenier, an Elections Canada spokesperson says.

Because many are first-time voters, it createdlong waits.

By 9:30 p.m., Grenier said all voters who were in line were brought inside the building, and the door was locked.

Senior officials with Elections Canada also told CBC News thatGuelph reportedly had other problems,including that staff didn't arrive for shifts in the morning and dropped out as the day went on.

Riding History

Since it's creation in 1979, the Guelph federal electoral district has been held only bythe Liberal and Progressive Conservative parties. It bounced back and forth between the twoin the 1980's and early 1990's, but has been exclusively Liberal since 1993.

Liberal Lloyd Longfieldwon in 2015 with 49.1 per cent of the vote.

Before Longfield, Frank Valeriote served from 2008 and 2015.

Brenda Chamberlain held the seat from 1993 to 2008.

Prior to Chamberlain, Progressive Conservative Bill Winegardwon two elections between1984 and 1993. He opted not to run in the 1993.

From 1980 to 1984, Liberal Jim Schroder was the MP for Guelph, and Progressive Conservative Albert Fish was the MP from 1979 to 1980.

Prior to 1979, Guelph was included in the riding of Wellington, which was created in 1968.
