30 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region Wednesday

Waterloo region saw 30 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Wednesday.

It brings the total number of cases in February to 1,033 and since March 2020 to 10,468. Of those, 9,922 have been marked as resolved.

The number of active cases dropped by 22 people to 316 on Wednesday. As well, there were 26 people in hospital, down five from the day before, and five people were listed as being in the intensive care unit.

No new COVID-related deaths were reported Wednesday.

Ontario reported another 1,054 cases of COVID-19 and nine more deaths of people with the illness Wednesday.

22 active outbreaks

There are currently 22 active outbreaks, including nine in long-term care and retirement homes.

There is also one outbreak in a school:Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School in Cambridge has two cases that are linked. The school board's website shows a case in a staff member and a student as of Feb. 23, as well as a case in a student on Feb. 20.

The Region of Waterloo Public Health has started to workwith the Waterloo Region District School Board and theWaterloo Catholic District School Board to identify high priority areas for asymptomatic testing. Testing is on a voluntary basis.

The other outbreaks include:

• Three in congregate care settings: One with 115 cases over multiple locations, one with 29 cases and one with 21 cases.
• Three in hospitals: Two at St. Mary's General Hospital and one at Grand River Hospital.
• One at Court at Laurelwood Retirement Residence, an independent living facility, with two cases in people who live there and two cases in staff members.
• Two at construction workplaces: One with three cases, one with two cases.
• One at a food processor with five cases.
• One at a manufacturing workplace with four cases.
• One at a warehouse with two cases.
