39 new COVID-19 cases, 1 new death reported in Waterloo region Monday

There were 39 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region on Monday.

It brought the total in March to 1,157 and since the start of the pandemic to 11,859, of which 11,309 have been marked as resolved.

There was one new death of a person with the virus reported, a woman in her 80s. Thatbrought the total number of COVID-related deaths in the region to 242.

There were 299 active cases with 24 people in hospital, including six people in the intensive care unit.

The number of cases that have screened positive for a variant of concern rose from 376 on Sunday to 396 on Monday. There were 27 cases confirmed as the B117 variant, which was first detected in the U.K.

Ontario reported another 2,094 cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

10% vaccinated

The region reported as of late Sunday, 74,577 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has been administered and just over 10 per cent of people in the region have received the first dose.

There are more than 14,500 people who have received both doses.

16 active outbreaks

There were 16 active outbreaks in the region. Three of them were at long-term care homes where the cases are in staff members, not residents.

There were five outbreaks in schools, which include:

• Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary Schoolin Waterloo with two cases.
• St. John Catholic Elementary School in Kitchener with two cases.
• St. Michael's Catholic Elementary School in Cambridge with two cases.
• Resurrection Catholic Secondary Schoolin Kitchener with two cases.
• Vista Hills Public School in Waterloo with three cases.

The other outbreaks include:

• Three in hospitals: One each at Grand River Hospital, St. Mary's General Hospital and Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
• One at Court at Laurelwood Retirement Residence, an independentliving facility, with two cases in people who live there.
• One at the University of Waterloo with 11 cases.
• One at Wilfrid Laurier University with three cases.
• Two at manufacturing workplaces: One with six cases and one with four cases.
