COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know on Monday

With cases soaring, the Quebec government has made masks mandatory for high school students,bannedteam sports and closed of gyms. The province is also connecting with the federal COVID-19 app. Here's what you need to know.

  • Quebec reported 1,191new cases of COVID-19 and six more deaths onMonday. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been79,650 confirmedcases and5,884peoplehave died.
  • There are 361 peoplein hospital (an increase of 27), including 62 in intensive care(a decreaseof two).

With cases soaring, the Quebec government has made masks mandatory for high school students starting Oct. 8. It hasalsobannedteam sports, organized leisure activities and shut down gyms.

At 5 p.m., PremierFranois Legault is expected to announce the federalCOVID-19tracing app will now be available in Quebec.

Quebec has reported the highest single-day total since the pandemic started, with1,191 new cases on Monday.

This is the fourth day in a row where Quebec's daily total has exceeded1,000.

Last spring, there were only five days whenthe province saw more than 1,000 cases the highest of which was on April 15, when there were 1,104 cases reported.(It should be noted therate of positive results was higher in April and May, suggesting there were more cases in the community at that time, we just weren't recording them.)

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Fever.
  • New or worsening cough.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Sudden loss of smell without a stuffy nose.
  • Gastrointestinal issues (such as nausea, diarrhea).

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
