Joyce Echaquan's eldest daughter threatened in Trois-Rivires, family says

The family of Joyce Echaquan says the Atikamekw woman's eldest daughter was threatened on Friday in Trois-Rivires. The city is the site of a three-week coroner's inquest into Echaquan's death.

The family of Joyce Echaquan says hereldest daughterwas threatened in Trois-Rivires on Friday, and it's imploring members of the public to remain calm.

Echaquan died last fall shortly after filming herself while staff at theCentre hospitalier rgional de Lanaudire in Joliette, Que. about an hour north of Montreal hurled racist insults at her.

A three-week coroner's inquest into the Atikamekw woman's death got underway on May 13. It resumes on Tuesday.

The family says the threats uttered toward Echaquan's daughter were unacceptable.

"Thefamily is holding tight and continues to move forward with its head held high," the statement read.

"It is unacceptable that violent and discriminatory remarks, or even hateful behaviour take away from the objectives of truth and reconciliation at the heart of these proceedings."

The family says local police intervened, and reassured the family that what happened did not reflect the sentiment of most residents in the city.

In a statement issued on Saturday, police in Trois-Rivires confirmed having received "a harrassment complaint coming froma member of the entourage of the Echaquan family."

Officers say they met with the personin order to draft a report and gather information.

No one has been arrested. They're encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

Echaquan's family says it may request that extra security be provided to them at the city's courthouse when the inquest resumes on Tuesday.
