A 74-year-old man has died after being hit by a vehicle in Montreal's Ville-Marie borough on Wednesday.

Police say the incidentoccurred around 9 p.m. in an alley near the intersection of Sherbrooke Street West and Mackay Street.

Vronique Dubuc, a spokesperson for the Montreal police, says several witnesses saidthe senior was already lying on the ground at the time of the collision for reasons that are stillunknown.

The man sustained injuries to his upper body and was unconscious when police arrived at the scene. Efforts to resuscitate himwere unsuccessful.

The 29-year-old driver was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

A security perimeter was set up at the scene and officers are investigatingto determine the circumstances of the incident.
