'All good things come to an end': Cheap beer deal over in N.B.

Beer drinkers in New Brunswick were rushing to liquor stores Thanksgiving weekend for their last chance to take advantage of a popular deal.

"I bought about 180 cases the last couple days," said Lloyd Bridges, owner of the Grove Lounge in Saint John.

"Sad to see it end, but all good things come to an end."

Since July 14, NB Liquor has been offering four 15-can packs of select beer for $75, a savings of $37.

Extended through Thanksgiving

The deal was supposed to end Labour Day, but the corporation extended it to Thanksgiving weekend. It was so successful, beer drinkers from outside the province came to New Brunswick to take advantage of it.

"It's a real good deal, I couldn't believe the savings," said Mike Adams.

Some argued the deal was created to combat cross-border shopping, which NB Liquor disputed.

870,000 cases sold in August

There's no word on final numbers, but in August, 870,000 cases of beer had been sold, making NB Liquor $15.2 million on the promotion.

Not everyone was happy. Moosehead Breweries said it felt pressured into taking part.

But many consumers are hoping the deal returns again.

"You get used to the low price," said Bernadine Hachey. "It would be great if it was that price all the time."
