Vital Information: Arthur aftermath: survival information

Many New Brunswick communities are opening public buildings to help citizens who have been affected by the power outages caused by post-tropical storm Arthur on July 5.

Many of these centres have been providing water, a place to take a shower and electrical outlets so people can recharge phones and other devices.

Community organizations and businesses have also been helping citizens with other services during the blackout.

Fredericton

Charging centres

• Open at Grant-Harvey Centre and Willie ORee Place, daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sunday July 13.

Shower centres

• Open at Grant-Harvey Centre and Willie ORee Place, daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sunday July 13.
• Showers also available at Good Life Fitness Queen and Prospect, plus Fredericton YMCA.

Bulk water supply

• Bulk water available in parking lots of Grant-Harvey Centre and Willie ORee Place.
• Bring your own containers.
• Water safe to drink.
• NOTE: Residents are reminded that city water is still working and is safe to drink.

Trees / Other storm questions

• Trees down involving power lines call NB Power at 1-800-663-6272.Please be careful around power lines.Assume they are live.Trees along city streets or for other storm related questions, continue to call 460-2038 or 460-2996.
• Clean up: The city is planning a special cleanup in three weeks. For right now, please only put out regular garbage for pickup.Limbs can be piled separately. Please use paper leaf bags. Materials will be collected in three weeks for the Citys compost facility.
• For those who want to remove their own fallen tree materials, please use:The empty lot next to the car wash on Two Nations Crossing, near the Citys Parks & Trees Depot (open 24 hours daily); the municipal compost facility at the old landfill near the Vanier Industrial Park (open from dawn to dusk), or the former Silverwood lagoon, opposite Orchard Drive.

Emergency food

• Social Development staff will be on hand at Grant-Harvey Centre and Willie ORee Place.

Food disposal

• Waste disposal bins have been set up at several locations for spoiled food. The bins will be emptied daily.

• For regular garbage day collection of spoiled food from household fridges/freezers, double bag and keep separate/covered until garbage day to avoid attracting animals.

Pools

• Queen Square Outdoor Pool, Henry Park pool, Royal Road pool,Killarney Lake and Wilmot wading pool are open.Allother city pools are closed. (Pumps cant operate which mean pool water cant be filtered and/or chlorinated.)

• Most supermarkets and convenience stores are now open.
• Cooke Aquaculture will be setting up an ice depot.

Quispamsis

• The qplex will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., until further notice, for charging electronic devices. Water and ice are also available. Residents should bring their owncontainers.
• Shower facilities are no longer available at the qplex.
• Residents can take trees/branches from the storm to Renforth Constructionfor free up until July 19. They must first show proof of residency at Town Hall to receive a drop-off coupon, which must be presented when they take their brush to Renforth Construction, at 91 Palmer Brook Rd. There is a limit of one coupon per household.Smaller brush can be composted through a homeowners private waste-removal provider.

Saint John

• City will begin pickup of residential trees and branches on July 15. Residents should leave the brush at the edge of their properties, not on the sidewalk. Curb-side cleanup is expected to take about four days.
• Cooke Aquaculture will be setting up an ice depot.

Chipman

• Water, coffee, tea, charging services are available at the Chipman Fire Hall.

Upper Kingsclear

Health Centres

• Health care locations in the Fredericton and Upper River Valley areas have power and are operating normally following the temporary closure and limited services available due to the recent severe weather.The locations include the Stanley Health Centre and the Central Miramichi Community Health Centre in Doaktown, which opened Thursday.
• New Brunswickers with health concerns can also useTele-Care 811 toaccess bilingual, registered nurses, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• In an emergency, call 911 or visit the local emergency department.

New Brunswick-EMO Centres

• The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization has established regional emergency operations centres in the regions of the province, outside of Fredericton, most affected by Arthur. The centres are located in Saint John, St. Stephen, Oromocto and Florenceville-Bristol.
