Design revealed for new Gander International Airport
People in Gander got their first look at a model of Gander's new airport terminal Thursday night.
The airport authority presented the model to show off what the $40-million building will look like.
Someresidents were concerned about what will happen to the current building, including the iconic 1950s-style international lounge and the arton display there.
It will be designed to handle 250,000 passengers a year.
The airport authority is counting on provincial and federal money to support the project.
CEO Reg Wright said the current terminal has to be replaced because it's simply too big for current demand.
However, he said the old sculptures and other artwill remain in the building for now.
Longtime Gander resident GaryTuff is happy to hear the terminalwon't be torn down.
"I think the authority has made it clear they want to preserve what's here," he said. "They're not out to destroy anything. It's just a matter of making the airport work."
"The new terminal building (model) looks good and it's nice to see that some of the characteristics of the old building here now are going to be incorporated into the new terminal."
