Max Winters, champion of Labrador sports, dead at 76

A well known volunteer and Inuit elder has died in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Max Winters, who passed away at the age of 76, was known for his involvement with the Labrador Winter Games, as well as dozens of other sporting events.

He also worked with the Labrador Inuit Development Corporation to settle a deal that saw the establishment ofNunatsiavut.

Born in Makkovik, Winters moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay when he was just a child. He went on to be a major player in the growth of softball and hockey in Labrador.

Winters was inducted in the provincial softball hall of fame in 1985, the order of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007and the volunteer hall of fame in 2012.
