Muskrat Falls reviewer named

Manitoba Hydro International has been named by the Newfoundland and Labrador governmentto complete an independent review of the Muskrat Falls hydro project in Labrador, but the official opposition says the review doesn't go far enough.

"Its just another set of eyes being asked to look at a stacked deck of cards," said Liberal leader Yvonne Jones.

In her opinion, the review won't determine whether the province can afford the $6.2-billion project, or whether it's in the province's best interests.

"Manitoba Hydro is not being asked whether Muskrat Falls makes economic sense, just whether it is technically feasible and a cheaper option than the other option offered by the premier and Nalcor," said Jones. "It is not weighing all the alternatives, nor looking at the basic question of whether we even need Muskrat Falls."

A third party review is part of the Board of Commissioners of Public Utilities review process, which will also include public consultations.

The board is currently reviewing the information submitted by Nalcor. Manitoba Hydro International will be reviewing two options for the project outlined in the project's plan. The options provide two scenarios for developing the new power plant.

Dates and locations for public consultations are expected to be released in the fall.
