Byelection called to replace Nunavut MLA Samuel Nuqingaq

Voters in theUqqummiut constituencyof Nunavut will go to the polls Feb. 9 to replace ousted MLASamuel Nuqingaq.

The constituency includes Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq.

Nuqingaqwas expelled from the legislative assembly last month. Fellow MLAs cited unacceptable conduct including many absences frommeetings.

"We look forward to having a new member before our next winter sitting," said deputy premier Monica Ell.

Nuqingaq also faces twocriminal charges, including assault. His next court date is scheduled for Feb.18to plead.

Nuqingaq recently posted an open note on Facebook to those who voted for him,stating, he was "very sorry to disappoint all of you."
