Stanley Cup fever reaches Kugluktuk, Nunavut

A big crowd gathered at the Kugluktuk airport Thursday to greet the Stanley Cup and NHL stars Mark Napier and Lanny McDonald.

"It's a very good day," said Adam Panioyak, who was among the crowd. "Look at all the families getting together, gathering."

"You could just see the kids' faces," says Grace Niptanatiak. "They love it."

A parade of people followed the Stanley Cup to the recreation centre, where 25 bags of hockey equipment were donated to the community. A further 25 bags of gear are destined for Igloolik.

The visit was organized by Project North, a non-profit group in Ottawa dedicated to enhancing the lives of Northern children. The group partnered with the NHL, Scotiabank, Canadian Tire and First Air.

The Stanley Cup and its entourage will be in Resolute, Nunavut, tonight before moving on to Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, Igloolik and Cambridge Bay.

The last stop will be Yellowknife on Saturday evening.

The public is invited to come out and take pictures with the cup at the Great Hall of the N.W.T. legislature from8:30 to 10 p.m.
