Whitehorse mayor shocked at councillor's Monday resignation

Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis says councillor Kirk Cameron's resignation Monday night came as a shock.

Cameron resigned his seat last night in protest of last week's firing of two senior city directors.

Curtis says he considers Cameron a friend, and willmiss him on council, but he says he supports the actions of the city's manager, Christine Smith.

"The decisions were made at an administrative level, and she's addressed her concerns to me, and told me what she plans on doing, and I respectfully the support the decisions she makes to ensure things get done the way she sees fit," said Curtis.

Curtis says it's unfortunate Cameron's resignation comes at a time when the city is dealing with potentially controversial issuessuch as the proposed 300-bed continuing care facility in Whitehorse's newest neighbourhood, Whistle Bend.

Curtis did not say what concerns the city manager had with the two managers, buthe says he trusts she'll fill the positions with the right people.
