North Alaska Highway reopened after almost 24 hour closure

The Yukon highways department says the Alaska Highway is now open all the way to the U.S. border crossing at Beaver Creek, but with cautions.

The Alaska Highway in Yukon, northwest of Whitehorse, opened Tuesday afternoonafter an almost 24 hour closure.

It was closed Mondayafternoon because of freezing rain, black ice and snow conditions.

The section between Whitehorse and Haines Junction opened Tuesday before noon and then the remaining section from Haines Junction to Destruction Bay opened later in the afternoon.

But there are travel advisories because of slush, black ice and blowing and drifting snow.

"Travel with caution and drive to road conditions, not necessarily the speed limit and also please watch for crews and equipment working," said Doris Wurfbaum, speaking for the highways department.

She said there's zero chance the South Klondike Highwaybetween Carcross and the American border will reopen Tuesdayand a slim chance the Haines Road from HainesJunctionto Haines, Alaskawill reopen.
