Yukon sends firefighters to Fort McMurray

Yukon's relatively quiet fire season has freed up a number of firefighters to go to Alberta, to help battle the wildfire burning in Fort McMurray, now more than 600,000 hectaresin size.

Twenty-eight Yukon firefighters have been sent, along with an agency representative and a mechanic. They're expected to be in Fort McMurray for 14 days, but could be recalled to the territory earlierif needed.

Mike Etches, director of Yukon Wildland Fire Management said it's a good opportunity for Yukon staff to offer support, as well as develop their skills.

So far this year, Yukon has seen just 10 wildfires, burning approximately 265 hectares. None are currentlystill burning, and the fire danger rating for all regions of the territory on Tuesday was considered "low" to "moderate."

The Yukon firefighters can be recalled to the territory within 24 hours, if necessary.

Firefighters are often deployed to other jurisdictions during the wildfire season, as needed.Last year, firefighters from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario came to Yukon to help out during a particularly busy time, early in the season.

Later in the summer, Yukon firefighters were sent to help out in Idaho.
