The Annie Liebovitz collection, donated to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, could be a game-changer for Halifax. Art tourism is big business in many other cities around the world:

Bilbao, Spain: Home of Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum, which is in itself an architectural stunner. It draws an estimated 10 million visitors to Bilbao every year.

St. Petersburg, Russia: The Hermitage Museum boasts a staggering 3 million pieces in its vast collection. It's one of the oldest museums of the world, founded by Catherine the Great in 1762.

Paris, France: No grand tour of art museums is complete without a visit to the Louvre in Paris. It's said that if you just want to glance at every item in the collection, you'd spend nine solid months looking at art. The Louvre is one of the most visited sites in Paris, attracting more than 8 million visitors annually. Admission is free the first Sunday of each month.

London, England: TateModern holds the largest art collection in the U.K., withmore than70,000 pieces and growing annually. The collection of British art is immense, dating back to 1500. The Tate also has a huge collection of modern art.

Toronto, Canada: Fans will tell you the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum is Toronto's crowning jewel. The ROM is Canada's largest museum and welcomes an estimated 6 million visitors each year.
