Fire in Amherst leaves 5 without lodgings, including 1 in hospital

One person has been hospitalized after a fire broke out in the former Victorian Hotel in downtown Amherst.

Five people have been displaced by afire in downtown Amherst, N.S., includingone person who washospitalized.

The Canadian Red Cross saidthe fire broke outin the former Victorian Hotel on Victoria Street at around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Volunteers arranged emergency lodging and meals for four other tenants wholived in units across from the one where the fire occurred.

The incident follows a fatal fire in Sydney, N.S., on Saturday.

Chris March, deputy fire chief at the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, said firefighters were called to a fire on Park Street on Saturday afternoon.

They found a body after searching the home.

No other injuries were reported.
