The provincial government is banning flying lanterns and haslabelled them a fire hazard.

Officials say flying lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, use an open flame to float through the air.

"We have seen several incidents where fires appear to have been started by floating lanterns," said Harold Pothier, acting fire marshal, in a release.

"There is no way to control them once they are lit and launched into the air. They pose a serious fire risk and should not be sold or used."

Officials say the lanterns have the potential to cause damage during the hot summer months
