Yarmouth County police investigate live lobster theft worth $8,400

Thousands of pounds of live lobster has been stolen in Yarmouth County, according to the RCMP.

Fourteen crates were stolen from the Morris Island wharf, south of Yarmouth, sometime between 5 p.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Each crate contained 100 pounds, or 45 kilograms, of lobster.

The Mounties say the lobster is worth about $8,400. They belonged to a lobster buyer who was preparing to sell the crustaceans.

The catch was being kept in a floating lobster car, a large platform that holds lobster submerged in traps.

Lobster season opened on Nova Scotia's southwest coast on Nov. 30.
