Parts of Nova Scotia flooded following heavy rain

The recent heavy rains have caused water levels to rise and led to flooding in a few areas of the province.

The Sackville River in Bedford breached its banks this week, flooding into a nearby parking garage, baseball diamond and football field.

Water levels in the river topped out at 2.6 metresTuesday evening. That's well above the minimum 2.3-metre height needed for the river to be considered flooded.

Damon Conrad, coordinator of the Sackville Rivers Association, says water levels are expected to keep rising.

"Chances are the flooding that we are seeing behind us is only going to get worse as the snow melts," he said.

"I [still] see a lot of snow still left over and with the small rain still coming, we're going to see the floods continue."

Conrad says there's not many places for the water to run. The flooding will go away with time as water levels in the Sackville River go down. People gathered along the river Wednesday to look at the flooding.

"There's only so much we can do to mitigate a river when it comes to flooding," Conrad said.

"We can manage what is built within a river flood plain. But unfortunately when it comes to river flooding, the more you can do to aid or reduce the amount of flooding, often the worse it gets."

Several fields near Stewiacke and secondary back roads in Lunenburg County have also flooded due to the heavy rain and spring thaw.
