Island Waste Management's new curbside monitoring van 'visible to the customers'

Island Waste Management Corporation has a brand new van for its waste and compost curbside monitoring program.

IWMC staff have been doing curbside spot checks for years using unmarked vehicles, but now the clearly marked van is also making the rounds.

"Well, I think number one we want it to be visible to the customers to know that it is Island Waste Management staff that are inspecting their materials curbside, not a stranger or somebody rooting through their waste," said Gerry Moore, CEO of the Island Waste Management Corporation.

"If you see the van, or when you see the van, you will clearly identify it as an Island Waste Management van. There is no mistaking of that. We like to call it the Waste Watcher. And it has a clear big watch on it and it has Island Waste Management on the side of it."

Moore said if staff see that garbage or recycling hasn't been sorted properly, information tags are left to educate the residents about what they are doing wrong.

There are some cases where the waste or compost in the bin will be rejected.

On the other hand, Moore said staff sometimes leave thank you notes for people who have been doing a good job sorting their waste.
