P.E.I. school to be partially demolished for make way for new building

Tenders have been called for the site preparation and partial demolition of the old Rollo Bay Consolidated School in eastern Prince Edward Island.

The building will be expanded and renovated to become the site of a new K-12 French school to serve the area.

The P.E.I. government is creating the new school because the current cole La-Belle-Cloche school in Fortune is full.

Once the initial site work is complete, another tender will be called for the main construction project, which is expected to take about a year to complete.

A hazardous materials survey found asbestos, lead, mercury and PCBs in the Rollo Bay building which will have to be disposed of during demolition.

The new school will be designed to hold 100-150 students.

The cost of the project is estimated at $6.1 million.

Students from cole La-Belle-Cloche are scheduled to move in to the new building in 2017.
