Intersection outside Saskatoon claims 7 lives since 2010

The collision which killed a family of fourhas brought up safety concerns about an intersection just outside of Saskatoon.

Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst were killed early Sunday morning when their car was hit at the intersection on Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road. Their two-year-old son Miguire and five-year-old daughter Kamryn were rushed to hospital and later died.

Catherine McKay, 49, now faces four counts of impaired driving causing death.

SGI statistics show that with the recent fatalities, seven people lost their lives at Wanuskewin Road and Highway 11 since 2010.

According to Statistics Canada, the population of Warman, Sask., was 4,764 in 2006 and went up to 7,084 by 2011. Nearby Martensville, Sask., saw similar growth of 4,968 in 2006 to 7,716 by 2011. Many people in these communities commute along Highway 11 to Saskatoon on a daily basis.

Saskatchewan has the worst record for impaired driving in any province, according to information from Statistics Canada in 2013. The rate of drunk driving is 683 incidents per 100,000 people in the province, which is more than double the national rate.
