Committee vows to save Sudbury's Rainbow Cinemas

A group of people are meeting for the second time to discuss ways to keep Rainbow Cinemas open in downtown Sudbury on Wednesday.

The theatre is set to close this week. The parent company, Magic Lantern Theatres, announced in July that it was closing the small theatredue tolow attendance and the need to upgrade theatre equipment.

A steering committee was set up in response to the announcement.

Beth Mairs, one of the committee members trying to save the cinema, said they have come up with many uses for the space to make it more vibrant and viable.

"Instead of [playing] second-run Hollywood movies, which has been the strategy that Rainbow in Sudbury has put forward most of the time, we would look at festival quality films documentaries, foreign, domestic, local and have a rep cinema," she said.

Mairs said, however, they would only be able to operate one or two screens, but the theatre is currently a sixplex.

The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rainbow Cinemas at 40 Elm Street.
