Flooded basements prompt warning from Sudbury officials

Water levels are starting to decline in Sudbury, and that's prompting the city to remind people to be prepared in case of an emergency.

This week, heavy rain flooded several roads and homes. Though water levels are going down, precipitation later in the week could cause more flooding, city officials said.

For those who find water in their basements be cautious, said Lynn Fortin, the city's co-ordinator of special operations and community management.

"Make sure that you get the gas shut off. Make sure that you get the Union Gas shut off to make sure that, if you do have to go down there for any reason, that youre going to be safe and youre not going to risk an additional emergency."

Monday's rainfall stressed the city's wastewater system. About 60 homes in Garson, Coniston, Wanapitate and Azilda experienced a sewer backup as a result.
