Sudbury medical research group looking for tax dollars

A new medical research group is asking the city to contribute $2 million toward its plans to build a research centre in Sudbury's south end.

The Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada (AMRIC) says it plans to seek$8 million in city tax dollars at a later date, for a total of $10 million.

That's how much Sudbury city council gave to Laurentian University when the downtown architecture school was just an idea. The move has been credited with helping convince the provincial and federal governments to chip in as well.

City councillors will debate the idea at their budget meeting Tuesday afternoon.

AMRIC plans to renovate an old school in Sudbury's south end into a research centre that would be affiliated with Health Sciences North.

Tuesday night, councillors will vote on the suggestion of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation that AMRIC get $750,000 over the next 3 years.

Council will then consider contributing an extra $1.25 million during budget talks this fall.
