Sudbury residents fired up over campfire bylaw proposal

Sudbury city council says plans to charge residents a $50 fee for having a campfire haven't yet been set in stone but it already has people fired up.
One online petition signed by residents opposing the campfire fee has since reached more than 2,800 supporters

Sudbury city council says plans to charge residents a $50 fee for having a campfire within city limits haven't yet been set in stone but it already has people fired up.

The proposed bylaw was approved in November.

The community services committee is slated to address rules around campfires next week

One online petition signed by residents opposing the fee has since reached more than 2,800 supporters.

Ward 6 Coun. Ren Lapierre, to whom thepetition is directed, said he's willing to talk with residents about their concerns.

"With a good communication strategy and with some of the changes that is being requested by the public, I think we'll be able to come to a really good process that the public will like and endorse without having all the contentious issues that are there now," he told CBC News.

Lapierre says the purpose of the bylaw is to increase public knowledge and safety on fires.
