Thunder Bay to decide on bid to host 2021 Canada Summer Games

Thunder Bay is considering a bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games for a second time but the bid would add about $300,000 to the municipal budget, which is still being deliberated.

A report to council says that money would cover things such as a required fee, hiring someone to prepare a bid package, and consultants to review city facilities.

The report notes two areas of concern already with existing infrastructure: the lack of a suitable rowing venue and no single space for an athlete's village.

But the administration report says hosting the games could result in "significant sports legacies, and economic impact."

Thunder Bay previously hosted the games in 1981.

Bidding on the games is expected to cost $350,000 over the next two years the bulk of which would be spent this year.

Early reviews of city facilities proposes using places like the Canada Games Complex, Fort William Stadium, Lakehead University and city-owned facilities, as well as some nearby trails and waterways for the various sports.

As for existing facilities that don't meet the governing council's requirements, new or renovated facilities would be required.

Bid winners to be announced in 2017

The community that actually gets the games is required to provide $3 million towards capital costs. No municipal dollars are required for the games operating budget, but $150,000 of in-kind services, or waived rental fees must be agreed to.

The last few games have turned profits ranging from $1 million to $3.3 million, but the city must serve as guarantor and cover losses, according to the report.

The report also states the overall economic impact from the 2013 games in Sherbroke, QC was estimated at $165 million.

The 2021 Canada Summer Games will be held in Ontario after the province switched years with Newfoundland and Labrador, which will now host in 2025.

Communitieshave until May 20 to submit a letter of intent to bid on the Games and until June 30 to submit some of their technical information.

After that, a short list will be made and full bids are due by Jan. 31, 2017.

The winning bid will be announced in March or April of that year, according to the Canada Games Council.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held in Winnipeg.
