Toronto expecting 2,600 privately-sponsored Syrian refugees, government map shows

Around 2,600 privately-sponsored Syrian refugees will be settling in Toronto, according to data released by the Government of Canada.

Around 2,600 privately-sponsored Syrian refugees will be settling in Toronto, according to a mapreleased by the Government of Canada.

Of the refugees who are coming to the GTA, the two largest groups areheading to Toronto. The city'sdowntown and mid-town will receive1,326 refugees.Willowdale will host1,079 refugees.

Though decisions are not final, the government has released a map of destination communities which itsays is "a representation of communities where private sponsors have put forth an application for a Syrian refugee."

The federal government's goal is to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of February, 2016.

Most of these will be government-assistedrefugees but many others will be privately sponsored by organizations and groups of Canadians.

The government says as of Nov. 24, it isactively processing more than 4,500 files of privately-sponsored Syrian refugees outside of Quebec and 74 have already arrived in Canada since Nov. 4.

  • Mississauga, 68

  • Brampton, 18

  • Concord, 9

  • Aurora, less than 5

  • Newmarket, 5

  • Pickering, less than 5

  • Ajax, less than 5

  • Stouffville, 5
