Justin Trudeau meets newly named Toronto Zoo panda cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue

In an event featuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other guests of honour, the Toronto Zoo has revealed the names of the first giant pandas born in Canada - Jia Panpan (translated to Canadian Hope) is the male cub, and his sister is Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy).

The Toronto Zoo has revealed the names of the first giant pandas born in Canada:Jia Panpan (meaningCanadian Hope) is the male cub, and his sister is Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne wereamong guests getting the first glimpse of the cubs, who have been held in a special maternityarea since their birth last October.

The zoo set up a special committeeto compile possible names for the pandas,and then people were able to go online to vote for their favourites from the shortlist.

The cubs marked their 100th day in January and are now considered to have survived their infancy.

Their mother, Er Shun, is on loan from China.

She and a male panda named Da Mao arrived in 2013.
