10 Book Series Your Kids Will Devour

Growing up, I was a voracious reader. Library day at school was my favourite, and when it was announced that a field trip to the big public library was coming up, my little book-loving heart couldn't wait for the day. I read everything I could get my hands on and to this day, I'm still an avid reader. My kids are growing up to be the same. They have a lot more distractions than I did, but they still do their fair share of reading and that makes me happy. Since they started reading, they have been through many books, but the books they seem to love most are those that are part of a series. I think this is because with a series, the reader gets to know and follow the characters through their stories. And in the end, they feel as if they know them and can't wait for the next installment to be released.

These are some of the book series my kids have been through or are currently reading through that I think your kids will love too.

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park

Recommended for ages 6 and up

This series is the first chapter books my kids ever read. They are quick reads (around 80 pages each), and follow the title character, Junie B. Jones, at home and at school from kindergarten to grade one. Junie is outspoken, funny and she encounters many situations that kids will find funny. There are 28 novels in the Junie B. Jones series and a few companion books.

Ivy and Bean by Annie Barrows

Recommended for ages 6 and up

The Ivy and Bean series is another great introduction to chapter books. The series follows Ivy and Bean — best friends who happen to be complete opposites of each other. These books celebrate differences and shows how the friends' characteristics complement each other while the reader is brought along on their many adventures (and misadventures)!

Judy Moody by Megan McDonald

Recommended for ages 6 and up

These early reader chapter books are all about Judy, an impulsive, feisty grade three student. We get to read about her third grade ups and downs while experiencing her very wide range of emotions and moods. We saw the Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer movie not long ago that was based on the Judy Moody series and we all enjoyed it.

Henry Huggins by Beverley Cleary

Recommended for ages 7 and up

Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy are characters I got to know when I was little. I remember my teacher reading the first book to us in class and as soon as I could, I borrowed the books from the library. The Henry and Ribsy books take place in the 1950s and rather than focusing on Henry's school adventures, we get to go along with Henry as he navigates situations with his neighbours and neighbourhood friends. 

Ramona Quimby by Beverley Cleary

Recommended for ages 7 and up

The Complete Ramona Collection is a spin-off of the Henry Huggins series (Ramona and her big sister Beezus are neighbours of Henry Huggins, Beezus is Henry's friend). Ramona is the imaginative, troublesome younger sister of Beezus and the books follow her times at home and at school. A Ramona and Beezus movie was released in 2006 that you'll want to check out if your kids like these books.

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Recommended for ages 8 and up

My kids are currently making their way through the Harry Potter series (I read them all as they were released!) and they love them. If you don't already know, the books follow Harry through his years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There are lots of ups, downs, twists and turns to keep your young reader entranced. The bonus with this series is that each book was made into a movie (which are also excellent) to watch after finishing each book. (We only watch movie adaptations after we've read the books!)

Note: As this series goes on, the stories get a little darker and scarier, so if you feel that your child isn't ready, put it on hold, or read the books together.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Recommended for ages 8 and up

There are seven books in this classic series and kids will get lost in the fantasy world they step into when reading these novels. The books follow four siblings who discover a mysterious wardrobe that takes them to the magical land of Narnia. Throughout The Chronicles of Narnia books, they encounter many different characters, both good and bad, and they experience countless exciting adventures.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Recommended for ages 9 and up

I saw these movies at a really young age on the CBC before I read the Anne of Green Gables series and became so absorbed that I had to read the books too. Anne Shirley is an unforgettable character who is feisty, impulsive, ambitious and outspoken. You can't help but love her. The books take place on Prince Edward Island and we follow Anne as she grows up and learns about friends, family and relationships. All kids should read this Canadian classic.

Smile & Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

Recommended for ages 9 and up

This series is a little different because they are graphic novels, written in the style of comic books. Because they are written this way, they were quick reads for my kids who whipped right through them in no time. The Smile & Sisters books are all about Raina who is in the sixth grade and has to navigate getting braces, a retainer, becoming a big sister, how to be a good big sister and so much more.

Dork Diaries by Rachel Renée Russell

Recommended for ages 9 and up

My eldest just discovered this series and is hooked. The Dork Diaries is a series of funny, personal diaries written by the main character, Nikki. Her diaries chronicle her life with her family and all the girl drama she experiences in middle school.
