Paper Plate Birds-in-a-Nest Craft

Hooray! Spring is in finally the air! We can feel it, and we can hear it! As each day passes, more and more birds are coming out of their winter hiding spots, and everywhere we go, the air is filled with the sound of chirping! It won’t be long now until the robins make their appearance, and begin to nest in their regular places around our yard.

To celebrate the upcoming arrival of spring, and to welcome our much-loved bird friends back after a long winter, we recently made this adorable paper plate bird and nest craft.

We love crafting with inexpensive, household materials, so it was fun to see how we could put together our birds and nests using common supplies that we already had around the house. It’s great for kids to craft this way, as it helps to stretch their imagination when they make creative, crafty things out of everyday items.

To make our bird and nest craft, we used:

• paper plates
• blue and brown paint
• paint brush
• colourful cupcake liners
• beige tissue paper (shredded paper or strips from a paper bag would work as well)
• google eyes (you could use buttons)
• yellow craft foam (construction paper would be fine)
• glue

To make our nest, the hooligans began by dividing their paper plates into two coloured halves. They painted the top half blue for the sky, and the bottom half brown for the nest. 

When the paint was dry, they tore the tissue paper into pieces, and crumpled them and glued them onto the brown bottom half of the nest. 

Crumpling tissue paper is always a hit with the hooligans. They love the sound that the tissue paper make when they rip and crumple it. Scrunching and crumpling the tissue paper is a great exercise to strengthen those little hand muscles.
While the tissue paper dried to the nest, they made their birds.

They folded their cupcake liners in half, and they glued a google eye and a beak onto each bird. 

Then they nestled their birds into the nest, and glued them in place on the paper plate.

Aren’t they adorable? A mommy and baby bird, all ready for spring!
