Rain Art

Rainy season on the West Coast has officially begun. When life gives you rain, you may as well use it to make something beautiful, right?

Rain art is one of my favourite spring projects because it’s easy, it’s beautiful, it can be done with kids of all ages and the end result is always sort of a surprise.

And the best part? All you need are some washable markers and white paper (something thick and absorbent like construction or watercolour paper works best) and a rainy day!

To get started, use the markers to draw a picture, some designs or scribbles on the white paper.

Anything goes for this step, but we find that the more colour, the better, so apply it liberally!

Also, something to keep in mind — fine details will be lost in the process, so it’s probably best to keep super intricate drawings for another time.

When you’re ready, take your drawings out into the rain and let the water work its magic!

As the rain drops down on your artwork, you’ll notice the colours starting to spread and mix with one another — it’s quite a mesmerizing process, actually.

When you like the look of your art pieces, carefully remove them from the rain and allow them to dry. The colours will continue to spread and mix for a while afterwards, so your finished piece will truly be a surprise.

When dry, your art will have a beautiful, very soft watercolour appearance.

The pieces are beautiful left as is, but if you’d like to take it a step further, you can add some outlining with a white or metallic marker. It makes for a lovely finished product, as does adding some hand lettering on top of the watercolour design. Either way, you really can’t go wrong!
