Legendary fashion journalist and adviser Andr Leon Talley died earlier this week at age 73, and the reaction from fans and fashion luminaries was swift especially on Twitter, where people shared their memories of meeting Talley and taking inspiration from his life and career.
The former Vogue creative director and editor-at-large was raised in Durham, North Carolina, and worked at Interview and Womens Wear Daily before he was hired at Vogue, where he became one of the worlds most influential arbiters of style and a trailblazer who worked constantly to increase diversity and representation in fashion. This is going to sound wild but I once had a conversation with Andr Leon Talley in the Whole Foods at Duke. He was just grazing the salad bar, holding court. He saw me looking and spoke. He was funny and smart and kind to me without being condescending. I never forgot that.

He got real local with me once he knew that I was from Central. He was Black, Black. And loved it. Anyway, I dont usually do these kinds of celebrity stories when someone dies but he feels like one in a long line of great losses this year.

got real local with me once he knew that I was from Central. He was Black, Black. And loved it. Anyway, I dont usually do these kinds of celebrity stories when someone dies but he feels like one in a long line of great losses this year.
