Chris Hemsworth is stung by comments from his heroes Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese , who have slammed Marvel movies for dominating cinema culture.

Thats super depressing when I hear that, the Avengers star told GQ in an interview published Tuesday . There goes two of my heroes I wont work with. I guess theyre not a fan of me. Im thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas.

Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I dont know, he continued.

The Australian actor was virtually unknown in the U.S. until Thor (2011) made him a household name. While Marvels reign at the box office began with Robert Downey Jr. s Iron Man (2008), Hemsworth has contributed to its staying power to the frustration of older auteurs.

Tarantino argued on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast in November that Marvel makes intellectual property out of stars and not the other way around. The Kill Bill director also said Marvels popularity at the theaters leaves not really much room for anything else.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has reportedly made more than $28 billion since its 2008 launch.

Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters, said Tarantino . But theyre not movie stars, right? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star. I mean, Im not the first person to say that.
