Sacha Baron Cohen delivered a scathing 24-minute takedown of social media platforms with particular scorn for Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg at an Anti-Defamation League summit on anti-Semitism and hate on Thursday.
The British actor and comedian, in accepting the civil rights groups International Leadership Award, also attacked the billionaires who run Google , its parent company Alphabet, YouTube and Twitter.
The tech companies amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history and facilitate global hate and violence, Baron Cohen argued.
They care more about boosting their share price than about protecting democracy, he added. Its like were living in the Roman Empire, and Mark Zuckerberg is Caesar. At least that would explain his haircut.
Baron Cohen called for a fundamental rethink of social media and how it spreads hate, conspiracies and lies, listing reasons why he believed Zuckerbergs warning last month against regulating the companies was bullshit.

Criticizing Facebooks refusal to ban political ads containing untruths, Baron Cohen said had it been around in the 1930s, it would have allowed Hitler to post 30-second ads on his solution to the Jewish problem. He also reprised this analogy, involving a restaurant owner and neo-Nazis, that he shared on Twitter in October:

Baron Cohen acknowledged his presence at the summit could be unexpected, given how some critics have accused him of reinforcing old stereotypes with his movie characters such as Kazakh journalist Borat and gay fashion reporter Bruno. But he explained how the characters were simply used to get people to let down their guard and reveal what they actually believe, including their own prejudice.
Borats success in getting everyone in an Arizona bar to sing anti-Semitic lyrics showed peoples indifference to anti-Semitism, while Brunos near-sparking of a riot by kissing a man during a cage fight in Arkansas showed the violent potential of homophobia, he said.
