Truwit, who nearly died in the 2023 attack, also set a new American record in the 400-meter freestyle S10 on Thursday.
"A year ago, I was just working to get back in the water," the former Yale swimmer said. "I now get back in the water and that sense of joy comes back.
"Tamayo was a legendary waterman," Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said.
The tight-knit surfing community reacted with shock at the 15-year-old's death and paid tribute to a happy, kind and respectful kid, very much loved by his surfing peers.
